To be offered at the annual Las Campanas Community Fund Silent Auction on June 29, 2019. The Chama River Canyon Wilderness in Northern New Mexico near Ghost Ranch, made famous by Georgia O’Keeffe, is one of the most beautiful scenic areas of the state. This wilderness area calls me again and again to paint in order to capture its timeless message of beauty and existence. The underlying shapes, patterns and rhythms are an endless mystery to be explored in different ways.
To be offered at the annual Las Campanas Community Fund Silent Auction, June 29, 2019. This wilderness area is a Northern New Mexico secret and one that continues to compel me to paint! The painting's sides are in a 5:8 ratio (think Fibonacci Series, 1,1,2,3,5,8,...). The limit of the ratio of subsequent elements is the Golden Mean, 1.6...., an irrational number. The Golden Ratio has been hailed since antiquity by artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci as the most beautiful, perhaps because it can be seen throughout nature (galaxy and fern spirals, Nautilus Shell, the human body, etc.).
Primarily palette knife after a wash-in. The color was pushed: Diablo Canyon is often a range of grey only. But the morning light can cause it to glow. This is a favorite venue near my home in Santa Fe far out on a rough dirt road. The area is still being filmed in westerns. It does feel like traveling back in time when visiting and painting this site. At the Marigold Arts Gallery.
Based on the Plein Air piece of the same name. Palette knife primarily.. As I painted this I was remembering the babble of the rushing creek/river while analyzing the turbulent flow. Turbulence is a favorite topic of Mathematicians, whether in air or water.
I've painted this a few times "en plein air" when the Madera Creek overflows and creates a nice foreground for this special Arizona Sycamore Tree setting. This was painted in the studio based on the plein air studies and photos. I intend to paint at this location many times.
A Mathematician paints.Landscape-inspired Abstract # 1 for 2019, oil, palette knife, 7x11, 11/7 is a rational approximation to the golden mean (1.61..., an irrational number). Do you see the embedded spiral? At the Marigold Arts Gallery
"En plein air" about 12 miles out on Monastery Road near Ghost Ranch. Monastery Road is a rough single-lane dirt road but recently upgraded somewhat with fewer ruts and more turn-offs for passing vehicles. Inquiries: firstname.lastname@example.org.
