This is the studio painting that was part of the 2018 Santa Fe Plein Air Fiesta juried exhibition at the Sorrel Sky Gallery the end of April to mid-May or so and is now available at the Purple sage Gallery.
The mighty Chama River can be passive and muddy or active and colorful. Painting at this spot on the Chama River is my favorite painting venue. Painted "en plein air". Juried in to the Plein Air Painters of New Mexico 8th National Juried Members Show. Sold by the Purple Sage Gallery in December 2017.
Painted "en plein air" one early morning far out on the Monastery Road at an Oxbow on the Chama River. This is my favorite painting venue, worth the long, hard drive down a single lane washboard road. A painting friend had a flat tire but fortunately for her a monk came along and helped. This road is well worth visiting the the continuous most specagular cliffs and rock formations in new Mexico. An amazing place and river.
Available at the Purple Sage Gallery, www.purplesagegaleria.biz.
For painters: Initial block-in with brush. Then palette knife. Water-mixable oils. Standard somewhat limited palette colors: (cobra primarily) cad lemon, cad yellow medium, cad orange (Utrecht), vermillion (to replace cad orange), madder lake (in place of alizarin crimson), yellow ochre, burnt sienna, ultramarine blue, viridian, sap green and titanium white. Trying to see if I can remove the cad orange and use the vermillion only. Mixed 'blacks' and 'grays' from a mix of the ultramarine blue and orange or (cooler) from a mix of alizarin crimson and viridian. Also darks mixed from sap green and burnt sienna.
Painted during the Santa Fe Plein Air Festival, at my favorite painting spot on the Chama River, out near the Monastery. It was a beautiful time of day, late afternoon. I have seldom painted that late there since I always want to drive back on the precarious road before dark.
Studio version and largest in a series of my new favorite place in Santa Fe to paint. The river is rushing right now after heavy rainfalls. I love to sit by the river, listening to the sounds of water flowing and the laughter of children and barking of dogs as they splash around in the river, the way we did when we were children.
